ABSTRACT
Instrumentalism describes an orientation of many modern workers toward their work. Instrumentalist workers disclaim significant control over their work and do not expect to find much regular satisfaction in it. They accept it, however, if it provides satisfactory, and often increasing, pay and material benefits including time off. Work becomes an instrument to what are now the principal emphases of a worker’s life.
