ABSTRACT
Although the term “Jim Crow” first came to public attention in “Jump Jim Crow,” a song copyrighted by northern white minstrel performer Thomas “Daddy” Rice in 1828-“My name’s Jim Crow, Weel about, and turn about, And do jis so”—by the end of the 19th century it was used to describe legally enforced racial discrimination against blacks.
