ABSTRACT
Literacy, which may be defined as the ability to function in a given society through the use of written materials, is a term which cannot usefully be more precisely defined, even in societies using phonetic alphabetic scripts, where learning one’s “abc’s” can be a relatively simple task. What a society defines as the minimal standard depends on its level of economic and social development. The definition of literacy will change as a society develops.
