ABSTRACT
The terms “profession” and “professional” have expanded to cover a remarkable range of activities since the late 19th century. Once reserved for a handful of “learned professions”—divinity, medicine, and law-the term “professional” is now commonly applied to almost anyone who makes a living at an occupation, and nearly any occupation can be called a profession.
