ABSTRACT

In order to be able to discuss problems arising in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, it is of value for lawyers, their clients, and the medical experts whom they consult to have some shared basic understanding of the disease itself. This chapter endeavours to explain the nature of cancer in terms directed, as far as is possible, to the non-medical reader. It also introduces and attempts to explain some of the key words that may be found in hospital notes or medical reports dealing with patients diagnosed and treated for cancer.
