ABSTRACT
The Chinese data came from 3 girls and 3 boys in a universitybased day care in Beijing, China (Guo, 1999). A l l of the children were 5year olds from middleclass families. They were from a senior class (dàbān, the highest of the three grades in the Chinese preschool system) of 33 children. They were selected with the help of the teacher on grounds of play com patibility and grouped into two samesex triads and two mixedsex triads.
