ABSTRACT
Those dealing with mentally abnormal patients have special responsibilities, to the patient and to the public. Because psychiatrists have powers not accorded to other practitioners, ie those of detaining a patient in hospital and giving him treatment against his will thus destroying his autonomy, the legal constraints are of vital importance. Psychiatric patients themselves are also unique in that their illness can make them dangerous to themselves and to the public, often in an unpredictable fashion.
