ABSTRACT

Duplex ultrasound imaging (see Figures 8.3-8.5; see, also, Figure 5.2) has now become the principal tool for investigating patients with venous disease. The principle of duplex ultrasound imaging has been described (see Chapter 5). It is now widely used in the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis, in the diagnosis of deep or superficial venous insufficiency and in the management of patients with venous ulcers. It provides both anatomical and physiological information about the venous system. Although it is becoming widely available, it may still not be present in all hospitals. It is dependent on having a good vascular technologist or a radiologist experienced in its use.
