ABSTRACT

A patient with narrowing of the arteries of the leg will usually present with intermittent claudication. Claudication is pain in the leg, causing the patient to limp. Typically a patient is able to walk a fixed distance, anything from 50 to several hundred yards, before experiencing severe pain in the muscles in the leg. If the patient stands still for a few minutes, the pain goes and the patient can walk the same distance again. Claudication occurs during exercise because the flow of blood into the leg is insufficient to meet the energy requirements.
