ABSTRACT

Questions on sentencing and criminal justice are not uncommon. In general terms they may cover either the aims and principles of sentencing or the appropriate penalties applicable given a set of circumstances. In either case they may form a part or the whole of a question. The questions which require a candidate to describe the aims of sentencing or the principles on which sentence should be determined have to date always taken the form of an essay rather than problem or case study style question. They almost always require some critical appraisal of the system; this may involve making your own views known to the examiner (provided they are supported by reasoned criticism).
