ABSTRACT

Delayed-recall Test 1 (1-3 months after initial exposure). Descriptive statistics on children's verbal mnemonic and nonmnemonic behaviors are provided in Table 2, Panel B. The children produced very few utterances classified as mnemonic, as is apparent in the table. Indeed, the frequency of production of mnemonic utterances was so low as to preclude formal analysis of the data. In lieu of formal analysis, we simply note that the children who had been 13 months at the time of exposure to the events produced no utterances classified as mnemonic. In contrast, the children 16 and 20 months of age at the time of exposure produced a few mnemonic utterances on events that they had imitated (16-month-olds) or on events that they had only watched (20-month-olds); they produced no mnemonic utterances on new events. Thus, there was some slim evidence of verbal mnemonic expression by children 16 and 20 months at the time of initial experience.
