ABSTRACT

In most town halls throughout the UK, commonly the largest department or most expenditure allocated is that of social services. Many statutes, including the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 and the Children Act 1989, cover the many duties and services which a local authority has and should provide in respect of the persons within its geographical area. Generally, these powers cover services for children, accommodation, day and after care facilities and support for families. Obviously, these powers fall alongside the general duties to educate, house where necessary, public health and consumer issues which a local council holds.
