ABSTRACT
These are the inferior criminal courts. They are supervised by legal qualified clerks and either lay or stipendiary magistrates. Formerly described as ‘petty sessional’ courts, they deal with the minor criminal offences, such as assaults, burglary and breach of the peace, as well as committal proceedings, sending the more serious offenders to Crown Court for trial.
