Care order and supervision orders – s 31 of the Children Act 1989

Care and supervision orders are the main public law orders available under the Children Act. A care order takes the child away from home and places him or her in the care of a local authority home or foster parents. Under a care order the local authority acquires parental responsibility for the child, but does not generally displace the parental responsibility of the child’s parents.
