ABSTRACT

There are 93 venues. Which case is heard by which court depends upon the classification of the case. The most serious cases, known as class 1 offences, are heard at ‘first tier’ courts; class 2, 3 and 4 offences are heard at second and third tier courts. They are presided over by High Court judges who hear the most serious cases and circuit judges, recorders and assistant recorders who hear the less serious cases.
