ABSTRACT

On February 10, 1983, Stefan Golab, a fifty-nine-year-old illegal immigrant, became ill while at work. He began to retch, then staggered outside and died as a result of overexposure to cyanide fumes, a by-product of the process used at Film Recovery Systems, a silver reclamation plant where Golab worked. Investigators were informed by other plant workers that the fumes were so bad that they often had to run outside to escape the noxious smell. Most of the workers were illegal aliens who were afraid to report their employer to the authorities for fear of deportation.
