ABSTRACT

Unfortunately, the prognosis for severe scoliosis is often poor once serious complications such as respiratory failure have appeared. Long term oxygen therapy may prolong life.

Cystic fibrosis is a rare genetically linked disease which occurs in one in 2,000 live births. It affects the body’s mucus secreting glands. The clinical features of the disease relate mainly to the increased viscosity of this mucus. There is defective chloride transport across the respiratory and sweat duct epithelial cells with increased sodium transport.
