ABSTRACT

The principal aim of the introduction of a guideline, from a medical perspective, is to ensure that the optimal way to manage a patient or series of patients is clearly documented. The production of a successful clinical guideline will be a rigorous process. A successful guideline will deliver consistent evidence-based, cost-effective care. It will provide a standard against which the quality of care can be audited and will provide a focus for education and continuing professional development. Within this framework errors are less likely to occur and consequently risks to the patient and the organisation are reduced.
