ABSTRACT

The first written homework assignment for preservice teachers in my social studies methods class is to prepare notes in outline form for a chapter from an 11th-grade US history textbook. At the next class meeting, we compare chapter outlines. Generally, they range in length from one typed page to eight typed pages. To open up discussion, I ask “Which outline is a more appropriate model to use with students in a high school social studies class?”
