ABSTRACT

Louisa May Alcott has been very popular in Japan ever since Book I of Little Women was translated into Japanese in 1906. Most Japanese families lived simply and creating a happy home was their ideal. As a consequence, the life of the March family made a strong impression on young readers. Jo's energetic and independent way of life also encouraged young women to aspire to careers, not just to becoming charming wives. Today when Japanese professors ask college students about Little Women, we learn that most girls have read and enjoyed the work.
