ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize best cultural counseling practices in four core areas of mental health treatment with racial–ethnic minorities: (a) help-seeking, (b) assessment, (c) treatment, and (d) training and supervision. These recommended practices are based on existing clinical research in conjunction with the authors’ almost 40 years of combined clinical experience in working with diverse populations. It is imperative that helping professionals take concrete steps to ensure that cultural aspects are integral to the entirety of counseling, not just at the process level, and that treatment is based on the most current sound knowledge in the field, and that training of practitioners and the treatment of clients reflect both.
