ABSTRACT

It is quite difficult to make an accurate objective assessment of the degree of dehydration, and therefore of the amount of fluid needed for replacement over and above the normal fluid required for maintenance. There must be very careful attention to the amount of fluid given to young children intravenously, as the consequences of fluid overload can include swelling of the brain and also water logging of the lungs, making gas exchange difficult.
