ABSTRACT

The muscles and skeleton are considered together here, as they are clearly intimately related. The bones are articulated together and movement is effected by muscles being attached across joints. For example, the biceps muscle, which bends the elbow, is attached to the upper part of the humerus, the long bone between the shoulder and the elbow, and then to the radius, one of the bones in the forearm. Contraction, therefore, of the biceps pulls on the radius, so bending the elbow.
