ABSTRACT

Once when my son Jeff was young, I was absorbed in watching television when he came into the room and wanted to perform a magic trick. I watched indulgently but kept one eye on the TV. He asked me to pick two cards, look at them, and return them. Then he tossed the entire deck into the air, reached out, and grabbed two cards-the exact two I had chosen. “Wow!” I exclaimed, genuinely astonished, forgetting the TV. Jeff just grinned and strutted out of the room, murmuring to himself, “That one made Dad say wow.”
