ABSTRACT
During the Civil War, a nearsighted Hungarian teenager was recruited to join the Union Army. He was put aboard ship from Europe to Boston, where the agent who signed him would earn a $300 bounty. As the ship neared the United States, however, the enterprising teenager jumped into Boston Harbor, swam to shore through chilling waters, and took a train to the recruiting station, where he collected the bounty for himself.
