ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book and the literature that they reference illustrate that the emergence of interpretive, critical, and cultural perspectives in health communication has broadened the theoretical, methodological, and pragmatic repertoire of the field. In this concluding discussion, we talk about how the scholarship on meaning, culture, structure and power advanced in this book contributes to health communication theory and practice. Taking stock of the work in this edited volume, we describe how we can expand on these through our future research agendas. Finally, given the growth of these “alternative” perspectives in health communication, we talk about how the field can maintain productive dialogue that builds health communication theorizing across different philosophical and methodological commitments.
