ABSTRACT

Martin and Judith live together in a small country cottage, title to which is registered in the name of Judith only. They are not married but plan to have children shortly. Judith has an excellent job and persuades Martin that he should give up work and stay at home and look after the now expected child. Martin is unsure, especially because he dislikes relying on Judith so much, yet she assures him that ‘when the child is born, this will be your home for the rest of your life’. Martin finally agrees, gives up work even though he was about to be promoted. After giving up work, but before the child is born, Martin completely redecorates one room as a nursery meeting the cost out of his savings. It comes as a great shock to discover that Judith, in fact, is expecting twins and the couple go to see the building society about a mortgage to extend their house. This is easily arranged and the building society duly register its charge. Two years later, Judith meets another man and, unknown to Martin, she takes out a bigger mortgage with a different building society, paying off the first and using the balance to go on a round the world cruise.
