ABSTRACT
Herniae are incarcerated (irreducible), strangulated or obstructed. An incarcerated hernia need not be obstructed or strangulated. Manipulation and reduction (taxis) is not recommended since the neck of the hernia often develops a fibrous constricting band which returns with the hernia into the abdominal cavity and may give rise to obstruction.
