ABSTRACT
A variety of technology-based interventions have been proposed to accelerate learning. Although these technologies have enjoyed some success, we need a better understanding of the manner in which specific technologies affect the pedagogical factors associated with enhanced learning. In this chapter, we attempt to articulate a path forward for the development of synthetic learning environments by identifying variables that are important to their effectiveness. Further, we attempt to articulate the conditions under which such technologies are most likely to be successful.
