ABSTRACT

When we look at the world today, we see an “increasing problem of inequality. … As noted by Nobel laurate Amartya Sen (1999), the core of human development is really a question of choice and freedom-which millions of children in the world today still do not have” (Iglesias & Shalala, 2002, p. 363). This is a global crisis; however, its massive scale should not intimidate efforts to ameliorate the conditions that create it. As we discussed in the last chapter, psychology has indeed a role to play here, especially regarding the individual and the proximate environment.
