ABSTRACT

Chapters 8 and 9 presented early intervention focusing on early childhood education as an applied area of developmental science that can promote competence and overall well-being. It was shown that, particularly in contexts of socioeconomic disadvantage, early intervention can make a difference and provide sustained gains. The focus there was on the development of competence, and it built on the theoretical perspectives in chapters 2 and 3, in particular. The present chapter focuses on the self in the context of immigration and acculturation. It builds on the theoretical perspectives covered mainly in chapters 4, 5, and 6.
