ABSTRACT
Steve Grant noticed that his canoe was gliding faster than normal. It took him a few
minutes to realize that he was paddling with more force than normal because he was so
caught by his emotion. On the shore people waved and clapped, boat horns sounded, and
people snapped pictures. A mile before Saybrook Point other canoes came abreast. The
paddlers included his wife and two children. Finally, on shore, his editor handed him a
cup of champagne and poured the rest of the bottle over Grant’s head. Speakers at the
podium praised Grant and his canoe (Grant, 1991).
