ABSTRACT

After a period of residence in the United Kingdom, a person may acquire citizenship through residence. Children born in the United Kingdom, who are not automatically entitled to citizenship through birth, have a right to be registered as citizens at the age of ten years, provided that the child has not been absent from the United Kingdom for more than 90 days in each of the first ten years.17 A child is also entitled to registration if one of his or her parents acquires citizenship or becomes settled in the United Kingdom during his or her minority.18 British Dependent Territories citizens, British Overseas citizens and British Protected Persons19 resident for five years in the United Kingdom are also entitled to registration.20 The Home Secretary has a general discretion to register any child as a British citizen.21
