ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a problem of multicultural education that is very much related to matters of art education, namely the question of whether multiculturalism implies an obligation to appraise positively the artistic “products” of other cultures. For example, if we work within the multiculturalist paradigm, are we somehow obliged to represent to our students the folklore, literature, and contemporary music that are culturally specific, let us say, for an ethnic minority within our country, as worthy of praise, appreciation, admiration, etc.? Of course, not in their entirety, but as represented by selected samples, which deserve special attention.
