ABSTRACT

How have Latino political issues been covered by general market Englishlanguage daily newspapers in other cities with substantial Latino concentrations? The findings from the content analysis of newspapers in 40 United States cities in 1989 help answer this question. Data were collected as part of the Latino National Political Survey (LNPS)1

This particular newspaper study was designed with two goals: first, to develop a sense of how much coverage the press in high-concentration Latino areas dedicates to the news of the Latino communities; and, second, to examine the types of issue covered in articles that mentioned Latinos or Latino national-origin groups. While the data set was designed for use as a “control variable” for that survey, it also offered an unprecedented opportunity to examine the characteristics of news coverage of Latinos over a considerable period of time and in a wide geographical area.
