ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to describe the state of the Brazilian television industry in the beginning of the 21st century, focusing particularly on the prospects of increasing regulation by government fueled by two main factors: 1) demands from civil society impressed by the assumed great power of television in setting the national agenda and influencing public attitudes and behavior and 2) the rise to power of an originally left-wing political party that, despite great ideological transformation in several public policy agendas, tends to remain faithful to its original doctrine in a few issues, among them social communication policies.
