ABSTRACT
This project really began in the fall of 1989, when I took my first teaching job at New Bloomfield R-3 High School (NBHS) in New Bloomfield, Missouri. This school was very near my hometown of Mokane, and both towns were quite small-fewer than 500 residents, including those who lived outside the city limits. It’s a joke that small Midwestern towns only have one, blinking yellow light; well, New Bloomfield didn’t have that. It had a stop sign. The school at New Bloomfield was small as well, with K-12 in the same building, and the elementary and junior high/high school separated only by a long hallway.
