In 1985, Jeanne H. Simpson detailed the advantage ofhaving professionals as writing center directors: "Ifwe demand working conditions that encourage the best from us, we must also be willing to listen and make reasonable compromises. The situation is a reciprocal one-the more professional we are, the more we can ask for; the more we ask for, the more likely it is that we will be recognized as professionals."
