ABSTRACT

The preceding chapter introduced qualitative findings regarding Omega approaches from interviews with public relations practitioners from around the world. In this chapter, we report and analyze the findings from a survey of more than 800 practitioners from across the United States. We refer to this study as the Dissent Survey. Our exploration of influence required a study like the Dissent Survey to explore this particular form of resistance. This study represents the most comprehensive look yet at dissent practices and attitudes within the public relations profession. The goal of the Dissent Survey was to move into new territory related to understanding attitudes of public relations practitioners toward dissent, and accompanying behaviors or tactics, in the face of

perceived organizational missteps or wrongdoing. We also wanted to learn how attitudes might vary by years of professional experience, type of organization, role, gender, and other demographics.
