ABSTRACT

There is good news and bad news about teaching ethics in introductory psychology courses. First, here’s the bad news: There are no chapters devoted to ethics in introductory psychology textbooks. Thus, if we want to teach ethics, we have to improvise the coverage to a much greater extent than we need to with other topics. We must also develop our own notions of why ethics needs to be covered, what material should be involved, and how it is to be taught. But, then there is the good news: There are no chapters devoted to ethics in introductory psychology textbooks. Thus, we can improvise the coverage to a much larger extent than we can with many other topics. And we have much more flexibility to develop our own goals and material for teaching ethics, without feeling as hampered by the text.
