ABSTRACT

Measurement lies at the very heart of human activity; humans have always been preoccupied with measuring their universe, and the units and methods of measurement are essential to science. Measuring is a starting point for mathematics. When studying whole numbers, the act of measuring occurs in its simplest form-counting discrete objects. However, when students begin to study the positive rational numbers, the emphasis shifts to measuring, and continuous quantities begin to play a greater role than they had previously.
