ABSTRACT

One of the most complex issues in sports involves drug use by professional and amateur athletes. The use of performance-enhancing drugs, testing standards, and punishments involving competitive athletes has generated debate among fans, players, sports executives and politicians. And the almost weekly nature of this coverage makes it an evolving news story. With all this in mind, a basic primer of the drug testing standards in various sports organizations serves readers best. But as of the end of 2005, implementation of the enforcement standards varies. Also, different philosophies of what constitutes “guilt” still permeate the athletic landscape.
