ABSTRACT

Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species met with intense reaction the moment it was published in 1859. By all accounts, this was to be expected. The book represented an unveiled challenge to the ideals and sensibilities of organized religion at the time. It continues to do so as evidenced by the fact that some school jurisdictions are still mired in debates around whether creationism should be taught alongside evolution-and, in some cases, whether evolution should be taught at all.
