ABSTRACT
Formal mathematics has been popularly regarded as the epitome of knowledge and truth at least since the time of the ancient Greeks. Pythagoras went so far as to assert that the universe was woven of number, and Descartes developed his own philosophy around the uninterrogated assumption that logically derived mathematical truths are objectively real and beyond question.
