These lines, from Blake’s 1802 verse letter to Thomas Butts, are often used to point to a tension that accompanied the rise of science in Western societies-a tension that is frequently expressed in such terms as God versus Newton, religion versus science, the transcendent versus the reductive, and enchantment versus explanation.
