ABSTRACT
Work and family researchers are increasingly recognizing the importance ofthe social, temporal, and geographic contexts within which individual workers and their families are embedded. One critical context is the workplace and the family-friendliness of polieies in place to enable workers to negotiate the competing demands of work, farnily, and community (Glass & Estes, 1997). Other relevant contexts include the couple and family, the temporal trajectory of a worker's career, cohorts and historieal periods, and the neighborhoods and communities in which workers live, to name but a few. Illustrative research questions might include:
• Do family-friendly workplace polieies inftuence the ability of dual-earner families to manage work-family confticts?
