This constitutional category overlaps in many respects, although not totally, with the classification into federal and unitary states. A ‘supreme’ constitution refers to a state in which the legislative powers of the governing body are unlimited. Conversely, a subordinate constitution is one whose powers are limited by some higher authority.23
