ABSTRACT

The time limits laid down in the RSC are intended to regulate the progress of litigation, to encourage the resolution of disputes, and to resolve disputed issues as speedily as possible,29 but the timetable for the various steps to be taken in proceedings can be, and very frequently is, extended by agreement between the parties or waived by them, and by Ord 3, r 5(1) ‘the court may, on such terms as it thinks just, by order extend or abridge the period within which a person is required or authorised by [the] Rules, or by any judgment, order or direction to do any act in any proceedings’.30
