ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 examined complex situations. This chapter looks at goals and how they form the most important aspect of a person working in a complex situation. In looking at goals, this chapter:

• Defines what makes up a goal • Considers goals in complex situations and how they relate to information

needs. • Looks at the various constraints that a situation can impose on a user

defining and achieving a goal. • Discusses how in complex situations goals emerge from the situation itself

and cannot be predefined in detail. • It looks at ways of ensuring a design helps a user set and achieve the goals.
