ABSTRACT

The role of marriage in family formation has changed dramatically in Europe and the United States since the mid-1960s. Perhaps the most fundamental change has been the rise in the average age at marriage, which has occurred concurrently with growing acceptance of sex outside of marriage. As an outgrowth of these trends, both cohabitation and nonmarital childbearing have increased substantially in many countries.
